ZENTEL Tablet and Syrup uses indications, and dosage

Zentel (Albendazole) is a medication used to treat variety of parasitic infections. It is in a class of drugs known as anthelmintics, which work by killing and removing worms from the body.

Zentel (Albendazole) is effective against a wide range of parasitic worms, including those that cause conditions such as elephantiasis, hydatid disease, and neurocysticercosis. It is also used to treat infections caused by worms that can migrate to different parts of the body, such as the liver, lungs, and tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

The drug is typically taken by mouth in the form of a tablet or suspension. It is usually taken once a day for several days, depending on the type and severity of the infection. In some cases, a second course of treatment may be necessary to completely eliminate the infection.

Special Patient Populations

Elderly : Experience in patients 65 years old or older is proscribed.

Reports indicate that no dosage adjustment is required, however, ZENTEL should be used with caution in elderly patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction.

 Renal impairment:

No dosage adjustment is required ; however , patients with evidence of renal impairment should be carefully monitored.

Hepatic impairment:

Since albendazole is rapidly metabolised by the liver to the first pharmacologically active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide, hepatic impairment would be expected to own significant effects on the pharmacokinetics of albendazole sulfoxide Patients with abnormal liver function test results ( transaminases ) before commencing albendazole therapy should be carefully monitored.

Contraindications

ZENTEL shouldn't be administered during pregnancy , or in women thought to be pregnant. ZENTEL is contraindicated in patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to the drug ( albendazole or constituents ) .

    Warnings and Precautions

so as to avoid administering ZENTEL during early pregnancy, women of childbearing age should initiate treatment during the primary week of menstruation or after a negative bioassay.

Treatment with ZENTEL may uncover pre-existing neurocysticercosis, particularly in areas with high taenosis infection.

Patients may experience neurological symptoms e.g. seizures, increased intracranial pressure and focal signs as a results of an inflammatory reaction caused by death of the parasite within the brain. Symptoms may occur soon after treatment, appropriate steroid and anticonvulsant therapy should be started immediately .

ZENTEL suspension contains carboxylic acid which may be a mild irritant to the skin, eyes and mucosa . it should increase the chance of jaundice in newborn babies .

Common side effects of Zentel (Albendazole)

include stomach pain, loss of appetite, and nausea. More serious side effects, though rare, may include liver damage and an increased risk of developing other infections. It is important to talk to a doctor about any potential risks and to discuss any other medications being taken, as albendazole can interact with certain drugs.

Zentel (Albendazole) is a valuable treatment option for parasitic infections, and has been used safely and effectively for many years. However, it is important to consult with your healthcare consultant before starting any treatment.

      Interactions:

Praziquantel has been reported to extend the plasma levels of the albendazole active metabolite.
Ritonavir, phenytoin, carbamazepine and phenobarbital may have the potential to scale back plasma concentrations of the active metabolite of albendazole albendazole sulfoxide.

The clinical relevance of this is often unknown but may lead to decreased efficacy especially within the treatment of systemic helminth infections.

Patients should be monitored for efficacy and will require alternative dose regimens or therapies.

      Pregnancy and Lactation

ZENTEL mustn't be administered during pregnancy or in women thought to be pregnant. it's not known whether albendazole or its metabolites are secreted in human breast milk. Thus ZENTEL shouldn't be used during lactation unless the potential benefits are considered to outweigh the potential risks related to treatment.
